The graduation requirement at John Burroughs is to complete level I and level II of a single language. However, most of our students complete their language studies through level V. Tenth through twelfth grade students also have the option to study a second language by signing up for a half-credit (twice weekly) full-year language elective. These electives are currently offered in beginning German, Russian and Chinese. Also offered in the Modern Language Department is a full-year, one unit course in Latin American Studies, which is taught in English.

The Language Department encourages Burroughs students to supplement their classroom learning with overseas trips and homestays, and sponsors trips in all languages except Russian and Chinese. For more information about Burroughs-led trips, we invite you to visit our language trips page.
